FORT DEFIANCE -- Funeral services for Steven Samuel Yazzie, 81, were held June 4 at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament in Fort Defiance. Interment followed at the St. Michaels community cemetery. Steven was born Jan. 7, 1934, in Hunters Point, Ariz. He died May 29, 2014, in Fort Defiance. Steven attended Sherman Indian School in Riverside, Calif., and was a retired water driller of 34 years for the Navajo Nation Water Sanitation Department. He enjoyed traveling to Rapid City, S.D., attending powwows and Window Rock basketball games, walking, and being with his family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Steven is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Yazzie; sons, Nathaniel Steve Yazzie, Frederick Steve Yazzie, and Raul Veliz; daughters, Andrea Yazzie, Gerldine Gabldon, and Vivian A. Yazzie; and 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Steven is preceded in death by his father, John Yazzie; mother, Jessie Bitloy Yazzie; and brother, Ben Lee Yazzie. Pallbearers were Nathaniel Steve Yazzie, Frederick Steve Yazzie, Randy Long, Raul Veliz, J.R. Richards, Jermiah Richards, Aaron Ross, and Eric Ross. Rollie Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
